We have been hearing rumors for the past year that Rihanna declined the invitation to perform at the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show. NFL requested that she do a special headliner show to support the players that refused to kneel for the national anthem.
After declining to sign at the Super Bowl 2019 halftime show, she was replaced by Maroon 5 and Travis Scoot and Big Boi. But Rihanna just told the world why she refused to participate in one of the most broadcast events of the year.
This movement started in 2016 when Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the customary anthem instead of standing, as a peaceful protest against police brutality towards the black communities. Soon, more and more athletes were supporting this movement but now against the systematic oppression from those leading the country.
The President of the United States urged NFL to fire any players who were protesting against the national anthem but they never followed through on his demands. The following season, Kaepernick decided not to renew his contract with NFL. But he wasn’t rehired for obvious reasons, which lead him to file a compliant with NFL which was resolved in 2019 with a confidential settlement.
Rihanna stated in an interview with Vogue that she refused to perform for NHL in order to show her support for Kaepernick. Rihanna stated that she couldn’t be a sell-out and would consider herself to be an enabler if she would support the NFL. Plus, she mentioned in the interview that she doesn’t agree with what the NFL represents and would not provide them with a service under any circumstances.
Rihanna has some strong political views and did not hold back in expressing her viewpoint of the current President of the United States. She considers that the most mentally ill person in America right now is Ronald Trump, the president.
She was fearless in expressing her viewpoints on why America is in shambles. Stating the obvious fact that the recent mass shootings are done by guns that are legally purchased. But Trump blames it on mental health problems. Then, she states that the president believes he can use his power to bully those who decide to stand up for what they believe in, such as Kaepernick.
Rihanna has recently moved to the United Kingdom in hopes of escaping the compressing political climate in the States, but she feels that it is impossible to escape it. We must agree, it seems every time we watch the news we hear of crimes and injustices against women, children, minority groups and black communities in the Unites States.
Just last month, the NFL reported that Shakira and Jennifer Lopez signed a contract to sing at the upcoming halftime Super Bowl show in Miami, Florida. Plus, the rapper JAY-Z Entertainment Company will be providing live music consultation for all of the live events and halftime show.
Rihanna currently is preparing a new album that will have a reggae inspired vibe that comes out from her inner soul. She stated on an interview with People magazine that it might not be typical reggae music but that the main element of the music will be homing in on the reggae infusion.
