The iconic tight black leather pants worn by Olivia Newton-John in the 1978 musical, Grease has been auctioned off to a new owner – Sara Blakely.
Olivia Newton-John recently held an auction in favor of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Australia. Olivia Newton played the sexy high school girl named Sandy in the musical “Grease,” who was known for her tight-fitting provocative ensembles.
Those famous tight pants were worn by Newton-John in the musical – dance scene with John Travolta “You’re the One That I Want.” This epic scene transitioned the innocent high-school student into a sexy Sandy. Newton-john shared a well-known fact at the action about those skintight black leather pants that she needed to be sewn into them for that scene.
Sexy Sandy’s skintight pants were auctioned off along with more than 500 different original items from the movie Grease. The tight black pants and leather jacket were sold off for more than $405,700, more than double the estimated price. The action raised more than $2.4 million for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Center, and most of the items were sold off at a higher than expected price.
For example, a signed Grease poster by John Travolta and the rest of the cast was sold for a whooping $64,000, which was estimated for $1,000. The delicate pink lace gown that Olivia Newton-John wore to the Los Angeles premiere sold for $18,750. Her PINK jacket brought in 25 times more than the estimated price and was sold for $50,000.
The 71-year old, Olivia Newton-John was born in the UK but raised in Australia, has been fighting breast cancer since 1992. After her first difficult fight with cancer, she established the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Center in Melbourne, Australia. All of the proceeds of the Grease auction will benefit the center.
Sara Blakely snatched up those iconic skintight black pants for $162,000. Blakely says the main reason she was willing to pay such a steep price for a pair of pants is because it was for a good cause. But the second reason, it that she has been one of Olivia Newton-John’s biggest fans since she was just a little girl. She admitted on an interview with “CBS This Morning” that when her friend told her that in two days, those pants were going to be auctioned off, she knew that she needed to snatch them up, no matter the cost.
The iconic pants have already found a new home in the Spanx headquarters and are currently up for display for all to see.
When Olivia Newton-John discovered that the Spanks founder, Sara Blakely was the proud new owner of her skintight pants she couldn’t have been more pleased. She even went as far as to send a personalized message saying Blakely was the best person to have them and thanked her for all she has done already for the Cancer Center.
